Documentary cinema as a way of understanding young people. Screening of the film “Raving Iran” at the Oak Grove Library

Dokumentinis kinas kaip būdas suprasti jauną žmogų: Ąžuolyno bibliotekoje – filmo „Raving Iran“ peržiūra

“I think, looking at the current direction of civilisation, creativity should only tackle the topic of freedom. However, a word I find best suited is liberation, instead of freedom, because liberation is a limitless process” – Jan Švankmajer, Czech cinema creator, animator, writes, playwright, and surrealist.

Carrying out the project “Cinema at the Library: The Younger Generation in Documentaries”, the Oak Grove Library continues the documentary cinema cycle. This time we are extending an invitation to the screening of the documentary film „Raving Iran“ (dir. Susane Regina Meures), which will take place at 18.00 on Wednesday, 26th of August, at the Oak Grove Library‘s Star Hall (Radastų st. 2, 1st floor).

The film will be shown in English.

The film “Raving Iran” tells the story of two young Iranian electronic music artists Anoosh and Arash. Living in Iran, where electronic music and public parties are strictly forbidden, they create an underground culture, organising illegal raves, and constantly balancing between the freedom of creativity and the threat of punishment.

The film unveils the life of young people living in a system, where creative self-expression is monitored, and artists are forced to find alternative ways to be heard. Despite the bans, the heroes of the film persistently seek to create and share their music, and to remain faithful to themselves.

The film, directed by S. R. Meures, is a story about the freedom to live, create, and to be oneself. The search for identity, self-expression, and attempts to find one’s own place in the world are universal experiences, regardless of geography and political systems at play. The film invites to think: how much freedom do we have?

The aim of the project “Cinema at the Library: The Younger Generation in Documentaries” is to actualise documentary cinema as an important tool for education, one that helps young people develop critical thinking, emotional intelligence, and the ability to reflect on complicated historical and social processes. Documentary cinema becomes not only a way of telling stories, but also a way to converse about that which shapes our personal and collective identity.

We invite the youth, students, and all those interested in cinema and history, to participate in the screening, and to discover documentary cinema as space to think, discuss, and know yourself, together.
