Kaunas Studies Reading Room

Kaunas Studies Reading Room of the Oak Grove Library, which has been in existence for more than five decades, invites you to visit it! It is located at the historical palace (K. Donelaičio St. 8), in Room 104 (1st floor).

Collection

Kaunas Studies Reading Room has a large collection of publications about Kaunas and its famous inhabitants. Here you will also find the latest books, brochures, advertisements and other publications related to the factories, plants, institutions and organisations that once operated (or still operate) in Kaunas, such as the Drobė fabric factory, the Gildija restaurant, the Kaunas electricity network, etc.

Directory

We have a comprehensive and unique library: “Kaunas 1600–2003”, “Kaunas dates and facts”, “Famous people buried in Kaunas cemeteries”, “Kaunas in poetry and prose”, “Kaunas region in the press (1845–1944)” etc. It contains more than 500,000 bibliographic entries which are not available on the Internet.

The staff of the Kaunas Studies Reading Room is ready to help anyone interested in Kaunas. We provide advice on how to use virtual information resources, various databases, electronic guides and other tools, and where you can find more information on issues of interest. This vast wealth of information is useful not only for professionals or students preparing projects or writing coursework and theses, but also for the general public who want to know their environment and people.

Education

Kaunas Studies Reading Room employees are active partners of cultural institutions in Kaunas and the country, regularly participating in various educational programmes or events. In the past several years, in cooperation with the organisers of the Kaunas History Olympiad for schoolchildren has been involved in educational programmes for schools (virtual Education “Kaunas: Dates and Facts“, Culture Passport Education “Get to Know the History and Cultural Heritage of Kaunas” and “Get to Know the History of Kaunas“) and for universities (“Sources of Searching for the Documentary Heritage”), and has taken part in the Festival of Histories and other events.

Virtual information resources

Kaunas Studies Reading Room specialists also offer virtual information resources about Kaunas, available online. These include the electronic directory “Kaunas: dates and facts” (datos.kvb.lt/en), which contains the most important dates, a gallery of images of Kaunas from different periods of time, memoirs of contemporaries, and much other useful and interesting information about Kaunas. Another electronic resource for those who like to linger over memorial plaques and other commemorative objects is the electronic guide “Famous Kaunas People: commemorating Kaunas” (atminimas.kvb.lt).
